MUSCAT: Concerned about the challenges of crossing the busy Al Shabab Street in Al Khoudh, residents have called for the construction of a pedestrian underpass to ensure safer and easier movement across the road.

Residents have submitted a collective memorandum to Muscat Municipality and the Tajawob platform, the national platform for suggestions, complaints and reports, highlighting the need for a solution that addresses the daily challenges faced by the community.

“We have submitted a proposal to the authorities to address a daily hardship faced by residents of Al Khoudh, particularly the elderly, mothers, people with disabilities and those with chronic illnesses, for whom walking is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” a resident said.

Residents said heavy traffic on Al Shabab Street and the absence of a safe pedestrian crossing have limited the use of the newly developed walkway on the opposite side of the road, creating safety concerns and effectively separating neighbouring communities.

Speaking to the Observer, resident Zubair al Balushi said two proposals had been submitted for consideration by the concerned authorities.

The first proposal involves constructing a pedestrian underpass opposite the National Bank of Oman – Al Khoudh Branch. Residents believe the location is technically suitable due to the presence of a wadi, which could facilitate excavation and reduce construction costs.

They added that the underpass would provide a safe and convenient crossing for residents of all ages, encourage walking and promote healthier lifestyles.

Residents also highlighted the role of such a facility in strengthening community connectivity by linking residential areas with public services and the new walkway.

The second proposal calls for relocating the existing pedestrian bridge in front of the old airport to Al Shabab Street, providing a more convenient crossing point for residents.

Residents said the proposed crossing would represent more than just an infrastructure project, describing it as a measure that would provide reassurance to families, support elderly residents and encourage daily physical activity.

They urged the authorities to conduct a technical assessment of both proposals and select the most suitable option to improve pedestrian safety in the area.
